A basic metabolic panel is a group of tests that helps measure essential functions in your body.
The following tests that make up the basic metabolic panel:
- BUN (blood urea nitrogen) test measures the amount of nitrogen in the blood to identify your kidney function.
- Creatinine which could tell your doctor how your kidneys are functioning
- Glucose, which checks your blood sugar levels
- Albumin is a protein that could change with kidney and liver disease
- CO2 (carbon dioxide or bicarbonate), that references the lung and kidney function
- Calcium, which may help to determine if there is a kidney bone or parathyroid problem (a gland in the neck)
- Sodium is one of the salts in the body
- Potassium, another salt in the body
- Chloride
To provide important information on your body’s metabolism, which includes the current status of your kidneys, electrolyte levels, acid/base balance, and blood glucose level.
You should be tested as part of your routine health exam or if you have been hospitalized.
Fasting (nothing but water) may be required for 10 to 12 hours prior to blood draw.
