BILIRUBIN DIRECT

A Bilirubin blood test detects the levels of bilirubin in our blood. Bilirubin is a yellowish material made during the body's normal process of breaking down red blood cells.

WHY SHOULD I GET TESTED?

Bilirubin is found in the bile, a fluid in our liver that helps us digest food. If our liver is healthy, it will remove most of the bilirubin from our body. If our liver is damaged, bilirubin can leak out of our liver and into our blood. Once too much bilirubin gets into the bloodstream it can cause jaundice. This test can help your health care provider determine if you have liver disease.

WHEN SHOULD I GET TESTED?

- If you have indications such as jaundice, dark urine, or stomach pain. These could indicate hepatitis, cirrhosis, or other liver diseases
- To find out if there is a blockage in the structures that carry bile from our liver
- To examine an existing liver disease or disorder
- To diagnose disorders related to problems with red blood cell production.

    • Why do I need this test?

  • High bilirubin levels in the bloodstream may be a sign of gallbladder disease and a condition called hemolytic anemia.
