To measure your general health status; to screen for, diagnose, or monitor any one of a variety of diseases and conditions, such as kidney disease, liver disease, high blood pressure (hypertension) or diabetes; to monitor the use of specific medications that may affect kidney health or liver function.
This test should be done as a routine exam to detect high blood pressure, diabetes, and more.
It is best to ask for your doctor’s preference because your doctor may want you to fast from food and liquids (except for water) for 10 to 12 hours prior to blood being drawn. Depending on the reason, it could be drawn after fasting or on a random basis. Follow any instructions you are given and tell the person drawing your blood whether or not you have fasted prior to your blood being drawn.
