FIBRINOGEN

Fibrinogen is a protein produced by the liver. This protein helps stop bleeding by helping blood clots to form.

WHY SHOULD I GET TESTED?

If you have problems with blood clotting or excessive bleeding.

WHEN SHOULD I GET TESTED?

Testing should be done if you have a blood clot, excessive bleeding (e.g. nosebleeds, bleeding gums), or both, and if your prothrombin time (PT) and/or partial thromboplastin time (PTT) is prolonged. If you have a relative with a hereditary fibrinogen abnormality or deficiency, testing should be done as a precaution.

    • Why do I need this test?

    • Your healthcare practitioner might order a fibrinogen activity test when you have:

  • Unexplained prolonged bleeding
  • A injurious blood clot (thrombosis)
  • Uncharacteristic PT and PTT test results
  • Signs of or undergoing treatment for disseminated intravascular coagulation or abnormal fibrinolysis
  • Signs suggesting an inherited or acquired coagulation factor (clotting protein) deficiency or dysfunction
  • Has been diagnosed with an acquired bleeding disorder to evaluate and monitor your clotting ability (over time)
