IRON BINDING CAPACITY AND IRON SATURATION %

Test which measures how well iron attaches to transferrin and other proteins in the blood You should not eat or drink for 8 hours before the test.

WHY SHOULD I GET TESTED?

Along with other iron tests, to assess our body's ability to transport iron in the blood; to help diagnose iron-deficiency or iron overload.

WHEN SHOULD I GET TESTED?

When your hemoglobin and hematocrit is low on a complete blood count (CBC); when our healthcare practitioner suspects you may have too much iron (overload) or too little iron (deficiency) in the body.

    • Why do I need a IRON + IBC + Saturation % test?

    • The transferrin test, TIBC, UIBC, transferrin saturation, and along with other iron tests, help evaluate the amount of iron level in the body by measuring several substances in the blood. These tests are often ordered during the same period and the results interpreted together to help diagnose and/or screen iron deficiency or iron overload.
    • Serum iron test
    • Transferrin test
    • TIBC Total Iron-Binding Capacity
    • UIBC (unsaturated iron-binding capacity of transferrin
    • Ferritin

  • When the iron level is insufficient to meet the body's needs, the level of iron in the blood drops and iron stores are exhausted. This may occur because:
  • There is a great need for iron, for instance during pregnancy, childhood, or due to a condition which causes chronic blood loss (for example, peptic ulcer, colon cancer).
  • Not enough iron is consumed by either foods or supplements.
  • The body is not able to absorb iron from the foods eaten in conditions like celiac disease.
