Lithium test analyses the quantities of lithium found in the blood in order to ascertain whether drug concentrations are in the therapeutic range or need moderation and alterations.

To discover and maintain your body’s therapeutic level by measuring lithium levels in the blood when just starting lithium medication, To discover lithium toxicity.

WHEN SHOULD I GET TESTED?

If you are being started on a lithium treatment, your dose will be adjusted according to your test results to achieve therapeutic blood levels. The lithium levels will need to be monitored routinely but can be ordered as needed to detect sub-therapeutic levels or high (toxic) concentrations.

TEST PREPARATION

Preparation for this test is not needed. However, take into consideration the timing of sample collection as timing may affect results. Generally known as a “trough” level, lithium blood levels are performed 12 hours after the last dose. When you have your blood drawn, tell the phlebotomist when you took your last dose.
