Salicylates testing measures the concentration level in the blood to detect and monitor overdose of saliculates, Salicylates are a group of medicine, available as non-prescription and prescribed by doctor. They are often used to relieve inflammation and pain, to reduce fever, and to prevent excessive blood clotting.

For the detection of a salicylate overdose, to evaluate its severity, and to monitor its resolution.

WHEN SHOULD I GET TESTED?

Taking too much aspirin or medications with salicylate ingredients can cause symptoms such as nausea, hyperventilation, ringing in the ears, or confusion and should be tested at regular intervals to rule out a salicylate overdose. If there are no symptoms, but you are taking a prescription salicylate for rheumatoid arthritis or other autoimmune disorder, you may need to get tested on a regular basis.

TEST PREPARATION

There are no necessary preparations for this test. However, your doctor may ask you when you last took a salicylate, how much was taken, and what other medications you may be taking. If you have a prescription salicylate, your doctor may have your blood collected just before your next dose.

    • Why do I need this test?

 

    • Testing can be ordered when you have symptoms related with an acute or chronic salicylate overdose. Generally, these symptoms will appear 3 to 8 hours after initial absorption in cases of acute toxicity and may include:
    • Dizziness
    • Confusion
    • Nausea and vomiting
    • Hyperventilation (rapid breathing); less common in children
    • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
    • Sweating

 

  • Additional symptoms that may develop include:
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Convulsions, seizures
  • Headache
  • Agitation
  • Hallucinations
  • Lethargy
  • Bleeding (rare)
  • Coma
  • Deafness
  • Overheating (hyperthermia), particularly in young children with severe toxicity
  • Shortness of breath due to fluid accumulation in the lungs (pulmonary edema)
